THE CHALLENGE
Internet-based health information has become a major source of health-related information, reshaping the way individuals seek medical insights in contrast to traditional, offline avenues. Most users seek health information and self-diagnose online. Instant access to vast amounts of information empowers users, but also blurs the line between being informed and overwhelmed. A surge in self-diagnosis and online health searches poses risks to user well-being, as excessive and anxiety-provoking searches may contribute to stress and depression.

The internet has become a primary hub for health-related information, reshaping how individuals seek medical insights and actively engage in managing their health. About 80% of American web users turn to online sources, with 35% attempting to self-diagnose, marking a shift from passive consumption to active participation. The rise of E-Patients, seen on platforms like Diabetes Mine and Smart Patients, fosters global networks of support transcending geographical boundaries. From seeking quick information to sharing experiences, the evolving landscape of health self-diagnosis demonstrates diversity and resilience.

User Research

In response to the COVID- 19 pandemic, social distancing has become one of the main strategies to prevent people from acquiring the virus. As a result, “social distancing” has resulted in the following side effects:

  • Online Survey: 70 responses collected to investigate user preferences, behaviors, and challenges in the evolving landscape of online health search.
  • Interview and Contextual Inquiry: 10 in-depth interviews were conducted to assess participants' experiences, uncover nuanced insights, and explore the balance between knowledge desire and anxiety in their online health search journeys.
  • Expert Interview: 2 participants who have 10+ years experience in UX/UI in healthcare industry to give feedback to our initial iteration.
